Kayak Paddle Handle Extension
Category: Kayaks, paddles, boating
Problem: I purchased an ocean kayak and I also bought a kayak paddle. Since I am tall, it was one of the longer paddles, which worked just fine. I then purchased a 12’ canoe and thought it might be fun to sit in the middle and paddle with the kayak paddle. Since the sides of the canoe are higher than the kayak, and not meant to be propelled by a kayak paddle, the blades of the paddle did not easily reach the water.
Action: I added an extension in the middle about a foot long, using an old vacuum cleaner metal wand tube, which happened to be exactly the right diameter.
Result: It works great!
Additional Thoughts: Would be great if it could be slipped on and easily removed for two different size people are sharing a single kayak or a person is in need of two different length kayak paddles.
When idea was conceived: 25 years ago
How much time it took to develop: 3 hours
How much money it took to develop: None
Current status: In use.
Since it was originally done: See Center Facing Sunfish Seating Concept. It turns out that propelling the Sunfish with a kayak paddle while sitting facing forward in the cockpit requires a longer than normal paddle because the Sunfish is so wide. The paddle that I had modified for the canoe now is just right for use with the Sunfish.
