Hobie 16 Main Sail Luff Conversion to Slugs
Category: Hobie main sail slugs, slug conversion
Product Modification Problem: As I have shared in other Hobie modification pages, I have a goal of being able to manage all of the rigging from the trampoline and sail in a center seat configuration. One of the key elements is to be able to raise and lower (See:.011017 Hobie 16 Main Sail Pull Down Line) the main sail easily and have it be caught by the topping lift/lazy jack. (See: ________________________) That is not possible without slugs.
Action: This means I needed to add slugs to the luff so the sail would remain in the mast sail track. I secured the slugs with some webbing bolted to the batten end fixture next to the luff. Eventually I will get a sail track stop for the mast. In the meantime I fashioned one. Because the upper four battens keep the sail stretched so that it does not lay horizontally in the lazy jack topping lift lines, there needs to be an additional line connecting the sail slugs to those battens so that when the sail is raised the line is tight and when the sail is lowered, they loosen and allow the battens to lay horizontally in the topping lift/lazy jack. Result: Worked great! Additional Thoughts: When idea was conceived: 11/25/15 How much time it took to develop: 6 hours How much money it took to develop: $30 Current status: Removed when I sold the boat Since it was originally done: Affiliate links: Amazon:Marine Nylon Sail Round Slides Slugs 7/16” – 10 Units - Five Oceans
