Hobie 16 Gooseneck Track Extension Pin
Category: Hobie 16, gooseneck attachment, catamaran, sailboat
Problem: The Hobie 16 has built-in 2 positions for the sail, where it is fully rigged or reefed. In each case, the gooseneck fitting slides into the opening on the mast, and is pulled downward by the downhaul. However, because I am interested in converting the Hobie to center seat sailing, I wanted the boom to be higher to give more clearance. However, the boom can only go as high as the near the top of the opening in the sail track. I wanted the gooseneck to essentially sit in the opening in the sail track, to get it as high as possible. I wanted to have the boom as high as possible, still allowing for the sail height to be adjusted. Recognizing that the higher boom would mean that I wouldn’t be able to use the full sail, I would also have to devise a way to sail with it partially reefed.
Action: To have the gooseneck essentially sit in the opening in the sail track, to get it as high as possible, I devised a pin that was nested in a tube which fit in the sail track. The pin sticks out of the tube about 2 inches, and the gooseneck fitting slides over the pin. The tube fits down in the sail track, and provides support. The height of the pin is adjusted by using a sail track stop.
Result: It worked great!
