Sunfish Side Drain Plug Holding End Repair
Category: Sunfish, sailboat
Problem: A corroded broken drain plug chain in an old Sunfish, which meant that the spring-like fingers that kept the plug from coming disconnected from the boat were now missing.
Action: I took a string and tied it around the remaining end of the chain of the plug. I attached a small zip tie in a circle. I then could squeeze the zip tie together, insert it in the hole, and it would keep the drain plug from falling out. But yet if you wanted to take the drain plug out, the zip tie could easily be squeezed together.
Result: It worked great! I didn’t have to buy a new drain plug for $15.
Additional Thoughts: It seems strange that the Sunfish would be built with components that would corrode in a moisture-rich environment in the hull since everyone knows moisture gets in the hull.
