Sunfish With Smaller Sail Rig
Category: Sunfish, boats, sunflower, sailboat
Problem: The Sunfish sail is quite large and while it works well for an experienced sailor, it may be a little much for a youngster or someone learning how to sail for the first time.
Action: There are a number of components required to easily transform the Sunfish with the regular sail into the Sunfish with a smaller sail. In this case I used a Sunflower sail.
Result: It works great! Beginners who have used it have been more eager to get out and try sailing the Sunfish.
Additional Thoughts: The apparatus that allows this to be quickly changed will be dealt with in other areas, however, the topping lift, mast stop and quick disconnect boom attachment are all part of this rig.
When idea was conceived: 8/30/14
How much time it took to develop: 4 hours
How much money it took to develop: $15.00
Current status: Available for use.
Since it was originally done: One nice thing about this rig is that the sail can be hoisted up the mast, leaving lots of head room in the cockpit which is particularly beneficial for a beginning sailor not having to worry about getting hit in the head with the boom.
I used most of this rig with the Wahoo sailing canoe.
