Hummingbird Feeder Ant Barrier
Category: Hummingbird bird feeder, yard, wild animals
Problem: Hummingbirds are so much fun to watch. When I moved to my cottage at the lake, I bought another hummingbird feeder and hung it outside my screened porch. To my delight, for some reason, because of the screen, I was able to stand still about a foot away from the feeder and the birds did not seem to recognize me. I discovered that in addition to being feisty, territorial creatures, they also make lots of chortling noise. The bird feeder was quickly emptied, and as I went to refill it, I noticed the reservoir contained many ants that had found their way somehow over the roof and down the hook to the bird feeder. I preferred to have a hummingbird feeder sans the ants.
Action: I created a hanging cup from a spray can top that allowed me to support the cup from the inside center while I could have a wire going from the outside to the bird feeder hook. By filling the cap with some noxious substance, that the ants had to make their way through, I eliminated ants getting to the bird feeder, much to the delight of the hummingbirds.
Result: It works great!
