Two Liter Soft Drink Bottles as Hot Water Bottles
Category: Heater, electric heater, ducting, bedroom
Problem: I like sleeping with the window open but I also like to be warm when it is chilly out without running the central heating system. Because I have a pacemaker, it is really not a good idea to have an electric blanket any higher than the waist. In the olden days they used soapstone and heated pans and I remember when I was a child, sick, a water bottle would come in under the covers. I wanted something that was simple and that would maintain warmth throughout the night. I was experimenting with ways to bring heat in under my bed covers. I have experimented with a number of ways of doing this, this being one of them.
Action: I initially used one two-liter soft drink bottle, but then moved to two because of the success. It turns out that by filling the bottles with hot water from the tap, and snuggling up with them next to the chest or at the feet, under a comforter (I have both down and Dacron-filled) the bottles will remain warm even until the morning. The heat trapped under the comforter keeps the bottles from losing their heat too rapidly. Since this is so easy to implement, one can have as many bottles as they like. It is really amazing.
Result: It works great!

Since it was originally done: In 2017, my younger son told me about a mattress warmer that circulated warm water. I purchased one and now use it.
