Garbage Can Lid Counterbalance
Category: Household, garbage cans, kitchen, workshop
Problem: The relatively inexpensive garbage cans that are opened by depressing a lever on the bottom with a foot often require a lot of pressure to open and then when they open, they spring open and all the connections and the foot pedal eventually bend and the garbage can is now trash.
Action: In order to relieve the initial pressure of opening the lid, I extended a piece of material from, the top of the lid back beyond the lid. I then hung different weights that would almost counterbalance the lid but would allow the lid to close slowly of its own volition, reducing the amount of force required to depress the pedal.
Result: It works great!
