Enhanced use – use of space underneath
Problem: When my microwave was sitting on my counter, first of all, it takes up a lot of space on the counter, and there is limited space in front. When I opened the door of the microwave, the space on the counter needs to be clear so the door can open. On more than one occasion I haven’t been paying attention and have knocked stuff off the counter or just barely caught them in time.
Action: Since my microwave wasn’t built to be hung under a cabinet, I thought the next best thing might be putting it up on stilts. In this case they turned out to be large coffee cups that raised the microwave up to within a half an inch from the lower part of the cabinet.
Result: It works great! Now, I have additional counter space under and in front of the microwave, I can set dishes in front of the microwave and open the door without fear of them going on the floor, and it is also easier to keep the area in and around the microwave clean.
Additional Thoughts: If one wanted to get fancy, those stilts would be a perfect project for someone with a lathe to turn from beautiful wood. Or, they could be something that was decorated with stickers by someone’s children or grandchildren.
Current status: In use.
